Racially
motivated incidents are on the
increase this year.
420 incidents have been reported to Cheshire
Constabulary between April and December 2004, making it likely
this year for the first time that reported incidents will be in
excess of 500. The local
Criminal Justice Board Race Sub Group will be looking
closely at the information to try and find out what the reasons
are for the upsurge in cases this year.
A new Consultation Panel was
launched by the REC at the end of February. The panel is the
first of its kind in Cheshire, and brings together over 70
people from black and minority ethnic communities to discuss
various policies of the criminal justice agencies. Shantele
Janes at the REC said ‘our first panel event
attracted over 30 people from a wide range of backgrounds to
talk about the Probation Service’s policy on dealing with
racially motivated offenders. There was some really interesting
discussion and it was a great success.' The consultation panel is
organised by the REC and all agencies who wish to use the panel
must sign up to a framework for basic standards which includes
things like offering payment for participants and supplying
information in a variety of formats.
This section will be regularly updated with latest events,
